首先,休斯顿畜牧业展览会和牛仔竞技表演了胜利返回,现在the Art Car Parade is back with one of the biggest collections of craftmobiles yet.
“I think COVID taught us that we have to be cautious at all times and take the guidelines seriously, but I believe we are coming back to life,” says Tommy Ralph Pace, executive director of the Orange Show, which is presenting the parade in conjunction with Team Gillman. “This is a completely outdoor event, and it’s part of that healing that the whole world is moving toward. It’d a celebration of our community.”
According to Pace, the parade should be spectacular, even compared to its usual standards. Last year, a small park and gathering event with art cars was all that was deemed safe as the pandemic continued to rage throughout the state. Now, artists who have been waiting two years, are ready for a chance to show off their art cars on the event’s 35th anniversary. These include more than 100 first-time participants.

One of the most eager contributors this year is Julon Pinkston, an art teacher at Frank Black Middle School in Houston ISD. His is one of the 35 different school art classes that are entering art cars, a practice he started in 2015 when he wound up with an inordinate number of hubcaps and an old truck, which eventually became a giant turtle. For two years, he’s had his students have worked on a mermaid-themed car, complete with seashells and a giant controllable puppet of the sea god Poseidon.
“Our young people are able to tap into some things they’ve never tapped into before,” says Pinkston. “It’s always been a unique experience we’ve missed the last two years. I had a feeling that this year was going to pull through. Last year, I was so overworked by putting curriculum online. So many kids failed, and for a lot of teachers it was heartbreaking to watch. This is about getting out and being part of the community again. The Art Car Parade and the people around it and the response from the people showing up has always brightened my day.”

On top of that, rap legend Bun B will be the grand marshal. Fresh off a killer set at the rodeo, Bun is riding high in the culture scene and shows a fresh face forward for Houston’s recovery form the pandemic.
“The Art Car Parade at its core has become a way for the city to celebrate itself,” says Pace. “The Orange Show creates the infrastructure, but this is a party for Houston by Houston. Having up to 400 residents willing to make their second-most precious possession into a work of art is a testament to the grit of the city.”
