It’s funny, then, that Rios didn’t even listen to Tejano music before Selena. He was in a relationship with someone who listened to a lot of it in 1988 when he first heard the fledgling singer.
“It was always just in the background or music we would hear if we went to a wedding,” Rios remembers. “But Selena had a song come out called ‘Acuerdate de Mi’ from her ‘Female Vocalist of the Year — and the Winner Is …’ album. It just resonated with me. I bought the cassette, and oh my God, I played that thing forwards and backwards more than 1,000 times. Every song was just so good.”
A few months later, Selena was scheduled to perform at the Festival Chicano at Miller Outdoor Theatre. Rios knew he had to see her perform and made plans to attend. He took a bouquet of red roses to the show, which was being taped for a TV show.
“I was gonna make it a point to meet her to make sure that she never forgets who I am. I had that in the back of my mind,” he says with a laugh. “I went up to the front, but security would only let you go so far because of the cameras. I was not gonna give up. I just sat down right where they wouldn’t let me go any father. When she finally looked my direction, I pointed to the roses and I pointed to her, like, ‘These are for you.’ She gave me the hand signal, ‘Come here.’ I jumped on this little crate, reached up, handed them to her and kissed her on the cheek.”
他最喜欢的歌曲是她的民谣,包括“ Tu No Sabes”和“ No Llores Mas”。
He’d always take roses, switching from red to white based on Selena’s affinity for the latter color. Rios and Selena would chat briefly at shows, and she eventually invited him backstage, where they sometimes talked at length between sets. Tejano acts normally performed two or three sets, multiple nights a week, at packed clubs.
“She was always making fun of herself. One time at the Island Club, during one of her breaks, she was taking one of her boots off. She had tube socks underneath. She showed me the bottom of her sock and she goes, ‘Look, they don’t pay me well,’ as if she can’t afford a new pair of socks,” Rios says.
Selena’s death left a void for fans who found in her an alternative to the traditional aspects of Tejano music and culture. No other act in the genre has come close to replicating her success. Rios, of course, took it especially hard, because he’d also lost a friend. He was at work when he heard the news.
“I had this collage of pictures of her on my desk. I just remember looking at the pictures, and I just felt it. I said, ‘Something’s not right here,’” he says. “My pager started going off like crazy. People were calling my job. I remember I left work and the sun wasn’t even out. It was just a dark day.”
Growing legacy
Today, Selena’s memory is stronger than ever and goes far beyond music. She infiltrates every aspect of pop culture and, just as she dreamed, has become a worldwide star. Rios had a full-body image of Selena tattooed on his leg in 1997. He was also one of five U.S. fans, alongside local tribute artist Amanda Solis, selected to attend the 2016 unveiling of the Selena wax figure at Madame Tussauds Hollywood.
“She was that genuine person. She was everything good about a person. Her fan base was very important to her and how she appreciated them. She would compliment you. She would see me and say, ‘Oh, I like those jeans.’ She was just like that,” Rios says. “Oprah Winfrey once said that everybody wants to be validated. They want to be recognized. Selena had that way of validating your presence, acknowledging, ‘You are a person, and you’re important to me.’
“I would have really loved for her to see all this, what’s going on with her life. It’s amazing that her legacy just keeps growing.”
