Interview: Tony winner Duncan Sheik brings world premiere of ‘Noir’ to Houston’s Alley Theatre

The Tony winner's new musical, 'Noir,"; had its world premiere this month at the Alley Theatre and runs through July 2.

Duncan Sheik has found Tony-winning success as a Broadway composer. Most notably, he wrote the songs for the rock musical “Spring Awakening.” He’s hoping his new musical, “Noir,” enjoys some of that shine. It had its world premiere this month at the Alley Theatre.

“You don’t necessarily have to be doing the storytelling through the music the way you might otherwise do a musical. You can do things that are set pieces, that have sort of a black humor about them or an over-the-top romanticism or an erotic thing can happen in the songs. It gives you license to go to these territories that are a little over the top and heightened,” Sheik says.
